Message from the HIGH
COMMISSIONER (Zambia).
BACKGROUND TO ESTABLISHMENT OF
MISSION
The Ghana High
Commission in Lusaka was first established
in 1964, when Zambia attained independence.
It was closed in 1966, following the
overthrow of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who
was a close friend of the first Zambian
President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda but was
reopened in 1976 only to fold up again in
1982. In the interim, an Honorary Consulate
was set up to take care of most of Ghana’s
interests in Zambia, with the Ghana Mission
in Harare, Zimbabwe, overseeing its
activities.
The decision to reopen
the Lusaka Mission was informed by the
desire to translate the cordial political
relations existing between Ghana and Zambia
into mutually beneficial gains and expand
the sphere of engagement between the two
countries. Additionally, the Zambian
Government facilitated the process by
fulfilling its promise to establish a High
Commission in Accra.
